In LAAMP, publishing a Competency is more than just grouping Courses together. It’s about controlling how and when users progress through training by applying sequencing rules, prerequisites, and completion logic. This page covers key configuration options available to Publishers when publishing Competencies.
Sequential vs Non-Sequential Delivery
When publishing a Competency, you decide (through the use of the "Sequential Courses" toggle) whether learners must complete Courses in a specific order:
Sequential (Ordered):
Courses must be completed one at a time, in the order listed. Each course unlocks only after the previous Mandatory Course is completed.
Non-Sequential (Flexible):
All Courses are visible immediately and can be completed in any order. Useful for refresher packs or parallel learning tracks.
This choice is set during the Competency publishing process and can be adjusted anytime.
Mandatory Courses
Each Course within a Competency can be marked as Mandatory or Optional:
Mandatory:
The user must complete this Course for the Competency to be awarded.
Optional:
Included for extra learning or reference, but not required to achieve Competency.
Marking the right courses as Mandatory helps tailor learning to different roles without duplicating content.
Auto-Reissue Functionality
Auto-Reissue ensures that users are automatically reassigned a Course.
This can be adjusted to a set number of weeks prior to the Expiry Timeframe set in the Course.
Example:
Competency: Forklift Operator Readiness
Course A: Theory Module (Mandatory)
Expiry Timeframe: 3 Years
Auto-Reissue: 12 (weeks)
The first time this User completes this Training, a timer will start counting down from 3 years.
When this timer hits 2 years, 9 months - The user will receive a notification that they have Training that is coming up to expire. When the User logs in to LAAMP, thy will see that this Course is available for completion - when completed, the cycle will start again.
The User will remain competent in this training until their Expiry Timeframe has passed.
Courses that are reissued will show a “Reissued” badge on the user’s profile, and LAAMP allow them to re-complete the training.
This feature ensures compliance is maintained without requiring manual tracking.
Using “OR” Logic in Competencies
The “OR Functionality” allows Publishers to define alternate learning pathways. For example:
Complete Course A OR Course B to satisfy this part of the Competency.
This is ideal when:
You want to offer multiple versions of the same training (e.g., Full Training or VOC)
Different user groups need slightly different but equivalent training
You want to support bilingual or role-specific content options
In the Competency builder, simply click the number assigned to the relevant Courses then click anywhere else on the screen to group those Courses. Please note that Courses that form part of an OR Pathway must be selected as Mandatory.
Example Use Case
Competency: Forklift Operator Readiness
Course A: Theory Module (Mandatory)
Course B: Practical Assessment (Mandatory)
Course C: Safety Video (Optional)
Course D: VIC-Specific Regulation OR Course E: NSW Regulation
→ LAAMP recognises either D or E as satisfying the requirement.
Best Practice Tip
Keep your structure learner-friendly: over-sequencing can create bottlenecks.
Use Optional Courses for enrichment or low-risk skills.
Document your OR logic so it’s clear to learners why they have options.
